At school - В школе

Zbyszek Karlowicz, a young man from Poland, has been invited to visit Jim's school. Jim is showing him round.

Jim: Where would you like to start? On this floor we have all the workrooms and the assembly hall.1 The classrooms are upstairs.

Zbyszek: It's really very good of you taking all this trouble.2

Jim: Not in the least.3 Being free this morning I can show you round4 without upsetting the time-table.5

Zbyszek: Let's start off with the workrooms then.

Jim: Well then, this is the dressmaking room. There's no one using it at the moment.

Zbyszek: That evening dress hanging on the wall seems most professional.

Jim: Well, you should see some of the work our carpentry class turns out.6 This is the carpentry-room. Those boys working over there are making some props for our school-play.

Zbyszek: (sound of distant singing) What's that singing? Do you have music lessons at school as well?

Jim: Don't you recognize it?

Zbyszek: Well, yes... it sounds like our Polish „Mazowsze”. Where's it coming from?

Jim: From the geography-room. I'll take you there right away.7 Er... by the way... talking of geography... I wondered whether you would like to meet one of our classes8 and tell them something about Poland. It isn't every day they have visitors9 from abroad.

Zbyszek: Well, that's a nice thing to do!10 Inviting me to look round your school and then setting me a trap11 like this!

Jim: Well, supposing you just answered questions.12 That wouldn't be so difficult, would it?

Zbyszek: But really, not knowing the language...

Jim: But you speak English perfectly. Well, here we are, this is the geography-room. We've even got a map of Poland waiting for you.

Zbyszek: Well, when would you want me to do it? This afternoon?

Jim: No, right away of course.

Zbyszek: You mean you want me to get up13 in front of all those children sitting in there? Why,14 there must be at least eighty of them.

Jim: It's two classes. Poor chap, you look just like a lamb being led to the slaughter. Will it really be such an ordeal? We could show them lantern-slides15 instead if you can't face it.16

Zbyszek: No, I'll do it. I won't let you down,17 seeing you've made all the arrangements.

Jim: That's really very nice of you. I'm sure you'll find our youngsters aren't nearly18 as terrifying as they look.

Zbyszek: Well, I'll do my best.

Jim: Good fellow! Well, here we go, then!

     Those boys working over there...
...in front of all those children sitting in there.
     Talking of geography...

Present Continuous:

     Where is it coming from?

There's no one using it at the moment. No one is using it at the moment, но на подлежащее — no one — падает логическое ударение.

Continuous Tense

(The Gerund).

     What's that singing?
     Dressmaking room.

That's a nice thing to do. Inviting me to look round your school and then setting me a trap like this.

     Supposing you just answered questions.
I won't let you down, seeing you've made all the arrangements.

     supposing — а если 6ы;
